WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO HOLD POETRY RECITATION CONTEST ON MAY 18
William Paterson University’s Department of Languages and Cultures will hold its 23rd Annual Poetry Recitation Contest on Thursday, May 18, 2006, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne. Close to 1,000 students from middle schools and high schools in northern and central New Jersey are scheduled to participate in the event.
The contest provides students with the opportunity to recite poetry in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Spanish, and English as a second language. Students recite, from memory, poetry by well-known authors and are judged on delivery, pronunciation, intonation, and poise. The competition is held on four levels—beginner, intermediate, advanced, and native—in each language, with the exception of Latin and ESL, for which there is no native level. Trophies are awarded for first place, second place, third place, and honorable mention in each category.
