William Paterson University Hosts Summer Camps For High School and Middle School Students
High School and middle school students can explore a wide variety of interests at
William Paterson University during summer camps offered on the University’s Wayne campus during July and August. Topics include jazz, nursing, writing, Web design, investing and leadership.
Some of the high school camps offer the opportunity to earn college credits; students may also choose the option of living on campus in residence halls to gain a glimpse of campus life. Resident campers will have a full slate of evening activities, including use of the University’s campus pool and sports equipment at the Rec Center. For High School and College Students:
13th Annual Jazz Improvisation Workshop
This camp consists of seven intense days of improvisation and performance for students 14 and older. Students work in small ensembles, attend classes in improvisation, and learn about jazz history and arranging from world-renowned jazz artists.
Dates: July 23 to July 29, 2006
Time: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Summer Writing Institute
High school students who are aspiring writers spend a week in an intensive environment learning the craft of writing. Foucs is placed on a variety of forms and styles, including essays, poetry, fiction writing, reporting and screenwriting. Students sharpen their skills and learn how to find their voice and writing style.

Future Nurses Summer Institute
Real-life nursing experiences, training for professional CPR certification and learning how to use a defibrillator are just some of the topics covered in this camp which gives participants an inside look at nursing as a profession. Students must be at least 14 years old and must submit health clearance information since participants will be visiting patients in local hospitals.

The Forensics Summer Institute
Participants in this camp will enter the world of a crime scene investigator. Students will learn to use chemistry, biology and other physical evidence to solve a crime. No prior knowledge about scientific principles or techniques is assumed.

Youth Power and Public Leadership Camp
An offering from the University’s American Democracy Project that is for high schoolstudents. this camp offers young people a structured and creative environment in which they learn about community action and public leadership, among other topics, and to make a difference and create change.

Wealth and Investing Camp
Five intensive days in money and investing for high school students who wish to increase their personal wealth. They learn to use financial software, and data from Wall Street financial service providers and engage in hands-on trading in the University’s E*TRADE Financial Learning Center’s state-of-the-art trading floor.

Flash Computer Institute
Macromedia Flash is used to create the visual displays found in most web-based games, banners, and advertisements. In this camp, students learn the basic Flash skills of image drawing, animation, adding pictures and movies, and sound and more. Students will create and customize two Flash games.

Camps for Middle School Students
CSI Crime Capers
Students interested in science and forensics will learn about crime scene investigations through as many as twenty-five different experiments including dusting for fingerprints, and analyzing handwriting. They will discover how science is used to solve the mystery of the crime scene.

Language Arts and Creative Writing Camp
In this camp, students learn to form ideas, create believable characters and plots and brush up on their language arts. Topics to be covered include reading comprehension, revising and editing, picture prompts, and grammar and spelling.

Advanced Robotics
Spend the week using imagination learning how to build robots of all different kinds by using motors, wires, controllers and wheels, and by the end of the week, students will have their own high-tech robot to take home.

Flash Games Computer Camp
Macromedia Flash is the industry standard for web page animation and Internet gaming. Participants learn to use basic Flash animation for creating a computer game. Students are given a secure space on an Internet server to publish their Flash games. This course is for the computer-oriented and creative students.

Time: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Electronic Lab Workshop
Thirty different experiments and projects can be built using the reusable electronics kit supplied with this camp. Each participant will receive an eighty-page manual, a solderless circuit board and enough electronics to conduct the experiments. Participants learn how the various components work and are encouraged to work at their own pace.
