WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY ART DEPARTMENT ACHIEVES PRESTIGIOUS ACCREDITATION FROM NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOLS OF ART AND DESIGN

The Department of Art at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J. has achieved accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) for the undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered by its College of the Arts and Communication.  NASAD is the national accrediting agency for art and design and art and design-related disciplines.

By achieving accreditation, William Paterson University is one of only 277 institutions with art programs that have achieved NASAD accreditation, which requires an extensive peer review process including a lengthy self-study of the institution’s programs and an on-site review by a visiting team of evaluators.  NASAD is the only national accrediting agency for educational institutions in the visual arts and design recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

“NASAD accreditation is a significant achievement for the Department of Art,” says Stephen Marcone, interim dean of the College of the Arts and Communication.  “This designation indicates that we are providing the highest level of education for students pursuing degrees in art and design at the University, and certifies that our programs are taught by excellent faculty in quality facilities.”

William Paterson University’s Department of Art offers a bachelor of arts degree with concentrations in art history and studio art; a bachelor of fine arts degree with concentrations in graphic design, computer animation, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture/ceramics, and furniture design; and a master of fine arts degree in art.  The department is located in two facilities: the Ben Shahn Center for the Visual Arts, which houses studios for visual arts foundation courses, art history classrooms, computer labs for graphic design and computer animation, and the Ben Shahn Galleries, well-known for its exhibitions of contemporary art; and the Power Art Center, which offers fully equipped studios and labs for photography, printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics and furniture design.  The department serves nearly 350 undergraduate and graduate students.

William Paterson University, one of the nine state colleges and universities in New Jersey, offers 35 undergraduate and 19 graduate programs through five colleges: Arts and Communication, the Christos M. Cotsakos College of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health.  Located on 370 hilltop acres in Wayne, the University enrolls nearly nearly 10,500 students and provides housing for nearly 2,300 students.  The institution’s 373 full-time faculty are highly distinguished and diverse scholars and teachers, many of whom are recipients of prestigious awards and grants from the Fulbright Program, the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the American Philosophical Society.
