ORFF’S CARMINA BURANA TO BE PERFORMED AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY ON MAY 1

Carmina Burana, Carl Orff’s famous scenic cantata, will be performed by the William Paterson University Choir and the William Paterson University Chamber Singers on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at 8 p.m. in Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne. Stephen Bryant, professor of music and director of choral activities at William Paterson, will conduct.  Admission is free.

Three alumni will return to campus as guest soloists for the performance:  Karen born Cafaro ’87, soprano; Thomas Courtright ’97, baritone; and Frederick Voegele ’07, tenor.  They will be accompanied by pianists Warren Helms ’88 and Dalia Sakas, both members of the adjunct music faculty at William Paterson, as well as the William Paterson University Wind Ensemble under the direction of J. Craig Davis, assistant professor of music.

Carmina Burana is Orff’s best-known work.  Based on 13th century Latin and German poems by the monks of Benediktbeuern, the cantata is divided into three main sections that deal with nature, the tavern, and love which are framed by an imposing opening and a concluding chorus in praise of Fortune, the goddess of fate.

Bryant’s distinguished career in concert and opera has taken him around the world, with acclaimed performances in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. A bass-baritone, he has received numerous oratorios and opera credits. He created the major role of Dante for the world premiere of Tan Dun’s Marco Polo, which he performed at the Munich Biennale, the Holland Festival in Amsterdam, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, New York City Opera, and with the Japan Philharmonic in Tokyo. Bryant has also recorded for New World Records, Sony Classical and Teldec.  A graduate of Oberlin College, Bryant earned a master’s degree in voice and choral conducting from the University of Michigan. He resides in Upper Montclair.
