Author to Speak at William Paterson University on April 24
Charles Hardy, an American living in Venezuela, who has written a book about politics in that country, will speak at William Paterson University on April 24 at 12:30 p.m. in the Cheng Library Auditorium. The event is open to the public. Admission is free.
Hardy is the author of Cowboy in Caracas: A Personal Account of Venezuela’s Democratic Revolution. Hardy, who as a Catholic priest spent eight years in the slums of Caracas caring for the poor, relates his experiences in the barrios, the home of the indigent. Many of the barrio dwellers are supporters of Hugo Chavez, long considered a foe of the United States, but democratically elected by the ordinary people of Venezuela.
“Charlie is a great raconteur and an expert on Venezuelan politics and culture,” says Sheila Collins, professor of political science and director of the master’s degree program in public policy and international affairs. “Venezuela is constantly in the news these days and Charlie can give a different perspective on what is happening there than one gets from the major media.” Hardy hosted study tours led by Collins for students during spring break in 2006 and 2007.
The event is sponsored by the Department of Political Science, the Master’s Degree Program in Public Policy and International Affairs, the Department of Anthropology, the Department of Sociology, and the Department of Languages and Cultures.
