PIANIST ANAT FORT TO PERFORM OCTOBER 28 IN THE JAZZ ROOM AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY
—Fort, a 1996 graduate of William Paterson, makes her Jazz Room debut
Pianist and composer Anat Fort, a graduate of William Paterson University’s acclaimed jazz studies program and a rising presence on the alternative jazz scene, will perform with her trio on Sunday, October 28 as part of the University’s fall 2007 Jazz Room Series. The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus in Wayne. Prior to the concert, Fort will be the guest for “Sittin’ In,” an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in room 101 of Shea Center. Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.
Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the performance at $15 standard; $12 senior citizens, William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni; and $8 for non-William Paterson students. William Paterson students may attend free of charge.
Fort, a 1996 graduate of William Paterson, will make her Jazz Room debut, joined by bassist Gary Wang and drummer Roland Schneider, who comprise the Anat Fort Trio. Born near Tel Aviv, Fort studied classical piano as a child, but began improvising at an early age. She came to William Paterson University to study jazz where she received her bachelor’s degree in jazz studies. Fort has released two recordings: her self-produced debut album, Peel, and her new CD, A Long Story, which was recently released on the ECM label. She has received commissions to write for various ensembles including chamber, chorus, and orchestra; her most recent commission was premiered in 2006 at the Opera House in Tel Aviv.
Now in its 30th year of exciting performances, The Jazz Room is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, from practitioners of traditional jazz to avant-garde to bebop to swing to Afro-Latin jazz as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has won numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.
