WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY ESTABLISHES THE REGION’S FIRST M.B.A. DEGREE IN MUSIC MANAGEMENT
— Innovative Degree Will Open Paths to Management and Entrepreneurial Careers in the Music and Entertainment Industry

William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J. has established a new master of business administration (M.B.A.) degree with a concentration in music management that will prepare graduates for management and entrepreneurial career opportunities in the rapidly changing music and entertainment industry.

The new program, an outgrowth of the master of music degree in music management, is the only M.B.A. of its kind in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area and one of the first in the nation.

The program is one of three new M.B.A. choices for graduate students at the Christos M. Cotsakos College of Business beginning in fall 2007. Students may choose to enroll in the general M.B.A. program, or an M.B.A. with a concentration in accounting, finance, or music management.

“We developed this degree to give students a direct route to the upper levels of the rapidly changing music and entertainment business,” says Steve Marcone, interim dean of the College of Arts and Communication and director of the music management program.  “There is an explosion of opportunities for ambitious entrepreneurs and professionals pursuing careers in the fields of product development, marketing, digital distribution, live performance, artist management, licensing, mobile, and more.”

The program capitalizes on William Paterson’s international reputation in music and jazz education, as well as its close proximity to New York City and industry connections. Students will have exclusive opportunities to learn from leaders who are shaping the music and entertainment industries.  Guest lecturers will include alumni and other executives from the music industry. Courses include multinational business environment and operations, entrepreneurship in music and the entertainment industry, and entertainment law. The completion of an internship is a requirement.

“We are in a unique position to offer one of the first M.B.A. degrees with a concentration in music management” says Sam Basu, dean of the Cotsakos College of Business.  “It combines the strength of our music management curriculum with an M.B.A. program designed to meet the demands of the real-world business environment.”

The Cotsakos College of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), representing the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide. The College, housed in a state-of-the-art building located at 1600 Valley Road in Wayne, emphasizes programs that provide students with real-world business experiences, including the Russ Berrie Institute for Professional Sales and the E*TRADE Financial Learning Center with its simulated trading room.
