PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND PERFORMS CREOLE CHRISTMAS AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY ON DECEMBER 8
The legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band will perform Creole Christmas, a concert of New Orleans jazz and traditional holiday music, at William Paterson University in Wayne on Saturday, December 8 at 8 p.m. in Shea Center as part of the University’s Vistas series.
Spreading the sound of New Orleans jazz since 1961, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has performed from their Preservation Hall home base in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter to Carnegie Hall and for audiences ranging from British Royalty to the King of Thailand. The music, an American art form, embodies a joyful, timeless spirit. Under the auspices of current director, Ben Jaffe, son of founders Allan and Sandra, Preservation Hall continues the tradition as a venue, band, and record label.
Many of the band's charter members performed with the pioneers who invented jazz in the early twentieth century including Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and Bunk Johnson. Bandleaders have included the brothers Willie and Percy Humphrey, husband and wife Billie and De De Pierce, and famed pianist Sweet Emma Barrett. These founding artists and dozens of others passed on the lessons of their music to a younger generation who now follow in their footsteps like current bandleader and trumpeter John Brunious.
The program is presented by the University’s Shea Center Presents, the Vistas Series, and the Jazz Room. Programs are made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, and Discover Jersey Arts.
