Schuhmann has been very active nationally and statewide in major associations that address teacher education.  She is currently a member of the Unit Accreditation Board of the National Council for the Association of Teacher Education (NCATE), past chair and member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE), former president of the New Jersey Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, and former president of the New Jersey Teachers of English as a Second Language/Bilingual Educators, among many other appointments.

She has written numerous journal articles and made many presentations across the country on issues of teacher education. During her career, she has garnered more than $50 million in grant funding.  Prior to her teaching appointments at Coastal Carolina University and Kean University, Schuhmann taught at the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education, Brookdale Community College, the Monmouth Adult Education Commission, and for the public school systems in Holmdel, N.J. and Louisville, Ky.
