WIDE RANGE OF CAMPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS OFFERED DURING SUMMER 2007 AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY

High school and middle school students can explore a wide variety of interests at William Paterson University during summer camps on the University’s Wayne campus during July and August. New camp experiences have been added to last year’s list. Topics include jazz, scratch DJ, TV news broadcasting, dance, comedy, nursing, writing, Web design, investing and leadership, among others.

High school students may also choose the option of living on campus in residence halls to gain a glimpse of campus life. Resident campers will have a full slate of evening activities, including use of the University’s campus pool and sports equipment at the Rec Center.

Working parents of middle school students can take advantage of a new before- and after-care program that provides extended-day services from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from July 9 and to August 3.  Middle school half-day camps can be combined to provide a full-day camp experience.  For a mix of enrichment and summer fun, parents can combine a half-day camp with a half-day “Summer Life” program, which includes indoor and outdoor activities such as a Teen Café, movie time, crafts and music.  “Summer Life” is hosted is partnership with Wayne Community Programs.

Bernadette Tiernan, executive director of the William Paterson University Center for Continuing and Professional Education, says, “Our camps offer a great variety of enriching and entertaining experiences for students.  Talented experts from the arts, music, business and education will bring unique skills to our campus and open a whole new world to our participants.  Working parents now have new options to ease the stress of ‘what to do’ each week.  We’ve got you covered.”

For High School and College Students:

Jazz Improvisation, 14th Annual Workshop
Dates: July 22 to 28, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The Jazz Improvisation Workshop is seven intense days of improvisation and performance and offers students 14 and older small jazz ensembles and classes in improvisation, arranging, and history. The program features world-renowned artists in nightly clinics and concerts, an evening at the legendary New York City jazz club, Iridium, and a final concert with students and resident faculty. The workshop is open to commuters and on-campus residents.  Faculty include jazz professionals Jim McNeely, Steve LaSpina, Marcus McLaurine, Richard DeRosa, David Demsey and Janet Reeves.

Guitar Workshop
Date: July 22 to 28, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The guitar workshop is designed to provide an intensive and fast-paced experience to expose the participants to new concepts and skills for the instrument in the areas of classical, rock and jazz. Private lessons, master classes, daily ensemble rehearsal, plus classes in technique, guitar history and performance development are highlights of the week.  Seth Himmelhoch and Gabriel Handy, members of the classical guitar faculty at William Paterson, are the instructors.

Scratch DJ Academy for High School Students
Date: July 23 to 27, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m.
The famous Manhattan Scratch DJ Academy brings its hand-on learning program to William Paterson University.  Students learn what it takes to be a successful DJ.  The Academy includes daily supervised, open-practice sessions and workshops on equipment and sound production. The workshop will conclude with a group presentation showcase.

Tabla Drumming
Date: July 20 to 22, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The tabla, a drum from India, figures prominently in the works of popular artist, and classical artists. All drummers—classical, rock, jazz and world—will explore cross-cultural developments in this camp. The three-day seminar provides an introduction to drumming in the North Indian style. Participants will work with accomplished tabla players, participate in clinics and lectures and attend concerts with selections from popular artists such as The Grateful Dead and Bob Becker performed on Indian instruments.

Fifth Annual Summer Money and Investing Workshop
Date: July 30 to August 3, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Five intensive days in money and investing for high school students who wish to increase their personal wealth. They learn to use financial software and data from Wall Street financial service providers and engage in hands-on trading in the University’s E*TRADE Financial Learning Center, the University’s state-of-the-art simulated trading floor.

Aspiring Writers Workshop
Dates: July 23 to 27 or July 30 to August 3, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
High school students who are aspiring writers spend a week in an intensive environment learning the craft of writing. Focus is placed on a variety of forms and styles, including essays, poetry, fiction writing, reporting and screenwriting, all of which provide an introduction to writing as a profession. Participants sharpen their skills and learn how to find their voice and writing style and create a portfolio of samples and publish a newsletter and a literary journal.

Future Nurses Workshop
Dates: July 23 to July 27, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Real-life nursing experiences, training for professional CPR certification and learning how to use a defibrillator are just some of the topics covered in this camp which gives participants an inside look at nursing as a profession. Participants must be at least 14 years old and must submit health clearance information since participants will be visiting patients in local hospitals.

Forensics Institute
Date: July 30 to August 3, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Participants in this camp will enter the world of a crime scene investigator. Students will learn to use chemistry, biology and other physical evidence to solve a crime. No prior knowledge about scientific principles or techniques is assumed.

Experiencing Psychology Research
Date: July 23 to 27, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Psychology Research Institute will provide a learning and recreational experience for talented and motivated students who want to learn more about the various fields of psychology. Participants will engage in hands-on research experiences. Activities will include sessions in ethics, research methods, developmental psychology, social psychology, neuropsychology, and cognitive psychology.

Computer Graphic Design
Date: July 30 to August 3, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Young artists and photographers will learn more about the field of digital graphic design. Participants discover the base skills necessary to use industry standard Adobe Creative Suite 2 software to create powerful print layouts. A hands-on course, all students use computers in multiple class projects.

Photography Institute
Date: July 9 to 27, 2007
Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This three-week photography workshop explores the fundamentals of photography using a manual single lens reflex film camera. Participants are instructed in camera use, film developing and darkroom printing and encouraged to examine their world and themselves through the lens. Emphasis is placed on technical skills, the creative process and visual awareness. Single lens reflex film cameras are available for loan.

Modeling and Fashion Workshop
Date: July 23 to 27, 2007
Time: 1 to 4 p.m.
This workshop examines the truth and history of modeling and provides instruction in posture, fashion, color combination, runway, print modeling and makeup. Workshop participants model in the end-of-the-week Summer Fashion Show, complete with runway and wardrobe changes.  Instructor Susan Rybin, a well-known teacher, actress, and talent manager, will present the successful techniques taught at the Rybin Studio of Drama in New York city for more than 20 years.

Infinity Dance Workshop II
Date: July 30 to August 3, 2007
Time: 1 to 4 p.m.
These intensive dance workshops focus on learning routines. Participants will learn basic techniques in ballet, tap, jazz and lyrical. Each workshop will culminate in a presentation. Workshop I requires no experience and Workshop II is available for those with dance experience.

On-Camera Workshop
Date: July 16 to 20, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 to 4 p.m.
On-camera workshop participants will learn acting, improvisation, theater, modeling and auditioning techniques for television commercials. Participants will transfer these skills to recorded commercials to be featured at an end-of-the-week screening and modeling show.  Instructor Susan Rybin was the director of the Rybin Studio of Drama in New York for more than 20 years, and founded Rybin Talent, her talent management company, in 1983.  Her clients have worked in films, television, and commercials.

Taste of Latino Cooking
Date: July 30 to August 3, 2007
Time: 1 to 4 p.m.
Learn how to prepare meals with quick and easy recipes. Each day, participants will focus on a different meal, culture, and nutrition, as well as table settings and etiquette.

Literacy Skills for College Success
Date: July 9 to 13, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This workshop will provide participants with an introduction to literacy skills needed to succeed in college. High school students will gain awareness of strategies for academic success in college in this intensive and hands-on workshop.

Starting Your Own Business
Date: July 30 to August 3, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Camps for Middle School Students

Before and After Care
Date:  July 9 to 13 or July 16 to 20 or July 23 to 27 or July 30 to August 3, 2007
Time:  8 to 9 a.m. and /or 4 to 6 p.m.

Busy parents can take advantage of Before and After Care to achieve an 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. schedule.  Students will be supervised by William Paterson University staff and college students.  Activities will include movies, reading and socializing.

CSI – Crime Scene Investigation
Date: July 23 to July 27, 2007
Time: 1 to 4 p.m.
Students interested in science and forensics will learn about crime scene investigations through as many as 25 different experiments including dusting for fingerprints and analyzing handwriting. They will discover how science is used to solve the mystery of the crime scene.

TV News Broadcast
Date: July 9 to 13, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m.
The TV news broadcast workshop offers participants an opportunity to produce, broadcast, and record a live television news program. The segment includes local, national, and international news, sports, weather and a feature story. Explore real world responsibilities including anchor, camera crew, director, audio and music engineer, technical engineer, floor manager, producer, field reporter, writer, interviewer, and set director. The workshop is an exciting setting for cooperative problem solving, critical thinking, field experience, and public speaking.  Anthony Bencivenga, creator of BFBN, the middle school news broadcast from Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Ridgewood, is the instructor.

Scratch DJ Academy for Middle School
Date: July 9 to 13, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m.

Flash Computer Games
Date: July 23 to 27, 2007
Time: 1 to 4 p.m.
Macromedia Flash is the industry standard for Web page animation and Internet gaming. Participants learn to use basic Flash animation for creating a computer game. Students are given a secure space on an Internet server to publish their Flash games. This course is for computer-oriented and creative students.

Photoshop for Fun

Edit your own photographs using the popular application Adobe Photoshop. Participants in this class will have hands-on experience learning to navigate the program’s latest techniques to create multiple individual and class projects.

Digital Storytelling
Date: July 30 to August 3, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
The modern expression of the ancient art of storytelling takes shape at the Digital Storytelling Camp. Digital stories derive their power by weaving images, music, narrative, and voice together, to give deep dimension and vivid color to characters, situations, experiences, and insights. Participants will create a story concept, engage in the storyboarding process, create, organize and edit the elements of a story and publish it to the Web to be shared with all at a culminating student film festival.

Discover Yourself:  Successful Paths to Life
Date: July 9 to 13, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Participants take a week to explore who they are. Using personality typing and learning styles, this camp examines careers, time management and organizational skills. Pointers on test taking and tips for better grades are covered, as well as anger management, bullying, harassment and conflict resolution. Participants are encouraged in peer acceptance, character building, and making and keeping friends.

Chefs Cooking Camp
Date: July 30 to August 3, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Learn how to prepare meals with easy and quick recipes. Each day, participants will focus on a different meal, culture, and nutrition, as well as table settings and etiquette.

Let the ideas flow and put them on paper. Participants explore creativity and discover ideas and how to transfer them from the brain to paper. Create reality, fantasy and ancient times in a variety of short stories.

Advanced Robotics
Date: July 16 to 20, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Spend the week learning how to build robots of all different kinds by using motors, wires, controllers and wheels. By the end of the week, students will have their own high-tech robot to take home.

Maglev Cars – Levitation for Future Transportation
Date: July 30 to August 3, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Magnet levitation is a peek at the future of transportation. Build your own futuristic Maglev car to race and take home in this present-day camp. Participants learn about magnetism and electricity and the relationship between these two forces while racing on a Maglev track.

Summer Life
Date:  July 9 to 13 or July 16 to 20 or July 23 to 27 or July 30 to August 3, 2007
Time:  9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m.
Join us for a mix of summer fun and enrichment as campers enjoy the rich and varied environment and opportunities of a small but supportive college extension campus. This program offers a mix of indoor and outdoor activities combining a Teen Café type environment with opportunities for camp-related technology enrichment/exploration, movie time in the amphitheater-style conference center, and free time to select your own craft and music projects or strategy games.  This program is offered in partnership with Wayne Community Programs.
