DAYLONG CONFERENCE TO TEACH EDUCATORS HOW TO USE ART AND TECHNOLOGY TO TEACH ABOUT ASIA TO BE HELD AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY ON APRIL 10

A conference for teachers that is designed to help them integrate information about Asia into their elementary and secondary classrooms using art and technology will be held at William Paterson University on Thursday, April 10.

”Teaching Asia Through Art, Action, and Activism” is a conference for K-12 teachers of social studies, art, or world languages, and school administrators interested in addressing this important topic. The conference fee is $60 which includes materials, breakfast and lunch. Participants can earn six professional development contact hours. The conference will be held at the University’s building at 1600 Valley Road in Wayne. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the conference ends at 4:45 p.m.

A series of workshops will be held during the morning session after opening remarks from Isabel Tirado, dean, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and a keynote address by Robyn Hunt and Steven Pearson, professors of acting at the University of South Carolina. Their address, “Imagining Asia Now: The Challenge of Time and Space,” draws on their experience in Japanese theater and actor training methods.

Morning workshops, to be held from 10:45 a.m. to noon, include “Why Learning About Asia Can Make You A Better Teacher,” presented by William Paterson professors Katherine Chen and Kathleen Korgen, sociology; and Benjamin Vilhauer, philosophy. “Discovering Asia Using Web Technologies” features Melda Yildez, from the University’s department of secondary and middle school education.

The afternoon session begins at 1 p.m. with the workshop “Teaching Asia Through Activism,” presented by William Paterson professors Rajender Kaur, English; Balmurli Natrajan, anthroplogy and Keumjae Park, sociology. The fourth workshop, “Teaching Asia through Art: Flavor of Chinese Ink Painting,” is presented by Zhiyuan Cong, from the University’s department of art. “Teaching Asia Through Action” is presented by Heejung An, elementary and early childhood education.

At 4 p.m., a lecture about introducing Chinese language into the public schools will be presented by Jean Modig from the Fair Lawn school district.

The conference is sponsored by the William Paterson University Asian Studies Program, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Education, and the Center for Continuing and Professional Education. To register, or for additional information, call the Center at 973-720-2354.
