The Future of the American City to be Discussed at William Paterson University’s 2007-2008 Distinguished Lecturer Series on March 14

Mayors Jerramiah T. Healy of Jersey City, Douglas H. Palmer of Trenton, and Jose “Joey” Torres of Paterson, to participate in a panel discussion with Emmy Award-winning broadcaster Steve Adubato moderating

A panel of mayors from three of New Jersey’s cities will sit down with Emmy Award-winning anchor Steve Adubato to discuss “The Future of the American City,” as part of William Paterson University’s Distinguished Lecturer Series on Friday, March 14 at 7 p.m. The discussion will be taped as a two-program special to appear as part of the CN8 series, One-on-One with Steve Adubato and Caucus New Jersey airing on PBS stations Thirteen/WNET and NJN.

Discounts are available for senior citizens, groups of 10 or more and William Paterson students, faculty, staff and alumni.  The lecture will take place in Shea Center on the campus in Wayne; parking is free.

The panel, featuring Mayors Jerramiah T. Healy of Jersey City, Douglas H. Palmer of Trenton, and Jose “Joey” Torres of Paterson, will discuss the political, economic, and demographic factors that continuously alter the dynamics of cities. Steve Adubato Ph.D., has worked as a media expert and columnist for MSNBC.com, and has appeared on the TODAY Show, MSNBC, CNBC, and the FOX News Channel as a media and communication analyst. He is a much sought after motivational speaker, Star-Ledger columnist and the author of two books, Speak from the Heart and Make the Connection.

Healy is a lifelong resident of Jersey City, where he has served as mayor since November 2004 when he made a successful bid to serve out the incumbent’s term. He was re-elected in 2005 to a four-year term. He began his career in public service as a public prosecutor, served two terms as chief judge of Jersey City Municipal Court, and was a city councilman at large from 2001 to 2004. He is a graduate of Villanova University and Seton Hall University School of Law.

Palmer, born and raised in Trenton, has served as the city’s mayor since 1990, and is the first African American to hold that office. He is president of the United States Conference of Mayors, and president emeritus of the New Jersey Urban Mayors Association. During his time in office he has focused his administration on urban renewal, expanding recreational programs for youth, improving health care access for his constituents, and initiating welfare reform. Palmer is a graduate of Hampton University.

Torres, mayor of the City of Paterson since 2002, served as a city councilman for more than 12 years, and served as council president for two years. He served the city as a purchasing agent for the Paterson Housing Authority, and has owned several successful businesses in Paterson, where he was born. His platform includes public safety, housing, education, and economic revitalization. He attended Rutgers University and is a graduate of the Professional School of Business. He is a member of the New Jersey Planning Board Association, and is second vice president of the New Jersey Urban Mayors Association.
