HAL GALPER TRIO TO PERFORM IN A LIVE RECORDING SESSION AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY’S JAZZ ROOM SERIES
Grammy Award-winning pianist and composer Hal Galper will perform with bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Rashied Ali in a live recording session on Sunday, February 17 as part of the spring 2008 Jazz Room Series at William Paterson University.
The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus in Wayne. Immediately after the concert, the trio will participate in a question-and-answer discussion with the audience in the performance hall. Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.
Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the performance at $15 standard; $12 senior citizens, William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni; and $8 for non-William Paterson students. William Paterson students may attend free of charge.
With nearly 90 recordings to his credit, Galper is the foremost proponent of the “Rubato” style of jazz improvising as demonstrated on his most recent recordings, Agents of Change (Fabola Records) and Furious Rubato (Origin Records). He is best known for his work with Chet Baker, Cannonball Adderley, John Scofield and the Phil Woods Quintet. He earned a Grammy Award and nomination for his recordings with the award-winning Phil Woods Quartet and Quintet.
After graduating from the Berklee College of Music at the height of the be-bop era, Galper’s reputation grew steadily. He anchored such bands as the Slide Hampton Quartet, the Lee Konitz Duo, the Stan Getz Quartet and many others.
Galper is internationally known as a jazz educator and author. He has received multiple awards for outstanding service to jazz education and has been the recipient of grants from the National Endowment to the Arts and other foundations.
Launched in 1978, The Jazz Room is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, from practitioners of traditional jazz to avant-garde to bebop to swing to Afro-Latin jazz, as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has won numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.
Funding for The Jazz Room at William Paterson University has been made possible, in part, by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.
