RICH PERRY TO PERFORM WITH THE WILLIAM PATERSON JAZZ ORCHESTRA IN THE JAZZ ROOM SERIES FINALE ON MARCH 9

Tenor saxophonist Rich Perry will perform with the William Paterson Jazz Orchestra, directed by David Demsey, in the final concert of the spring Jazz Room Series on Sunday, March 9 at William Paterson University.

The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus in Wayne.  Prior to the concert, Perry will be the guest for “Sittin’ In,” an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in room 101 of Shea Center.  Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.

Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the performance at $15 standard; $12 for senior citizens, William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni; and $8 for non-William Paterson students. William Paterson students may attend free of charge.

Perry’s beautiful tone and sophisticated harmonic conception have given him a uniquely creative voice that critics describe as “eloquent,” “inventive,” and “thoughtfully lyrical.”

In 1977 Perry joined the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and spent the next two years touring the U.S. and Europe. When Jones left the band, Perry continued playing with Mel Lewis, recording three LPs with him, including Live in Montreux and Naturally. A veteran member of the band, now known as The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Perry can be heard every Monday night at the Village Vanguard in New York City. He has recorded extensively for SteepleChase, including 15 CDs as a leader.

Perry is an instructor of jazz improvisation at William Paterson and has held clinics and workshops in the U.S. and abroad.

Now in its 30th year of exciting performances, The Jazz Room is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, from practitioners of traditional jazz to avant-garde to bebop to swing to Afro-Latin jazz, as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles.  The series has won numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.

Funding for The Jazz Room at William Paterson University has been made possible, in part, by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.
