MUSIC INDUSTRY EXECUTIVES AND GLOBAL DEFENSE COMPANY TO BE HONORED DURING WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY’S 18TH ANNUAL LEGACY AWARD GALA ON APRIL 5

Two prominent music industry executives and one of the country’s premier global defense aerospace companies will be honored during a music-filled evening as the William Paterson University Foundation hosts its 18th annual Legacy Award Gala on Saturday, April 5, 2008 at The Villa at Mountain Lakes.

Legacy Awards will be presented to James Caparro of Saddle River, founder, EDC, LLC; Bruce Lundvall of Wyckoff, president and CEO, Blue Note Label Group; and BAE Systems, with facilities in Wayne. The gala, the Foundation’s annual event to raise funds to support the University’s mission of promoting student success and academic excellence, also will include the William Paterson University Alumni Association’s presentation of the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Faculty Service Award.

Mulgrew Miller, a jazz pianist and composer of international stature, and the director of William Paterson’s Jazz Studies Program, will perform at the gala with the William Paterson University Jazz Orchestra, conducted by David Demsey of Wayne, professor of music, coordinator of the Jazz Studies Program, and the recipient of this year’s Faculty Service Award.  Miller is one of the most recorded pianists on the jazz scene today.  A veteran of tours and recordings with such ensembles as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, the Woody Shaw Quintet and the Mercer Ellington Orchestra, he regularly tours throughout the world.

“Funds raised by the Legacy Award Gala are an investment in University initiatives supporting student success such as scholarships, student life, and faculty research,” says Sandra S. Deller, vice president for institutional advancement and president of the William Paterson University Foundation. “The dividends on this investment are over the lifetime of our students.”

During a ceremony prior to the Legacy Gala, the Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented to Catherine Ryan Callagee ’83 of Emerson, vice president of information services, UPS; Joseph J. Douress ’82 of Easton, Pennsylvania, senior vice president, client development services, LexisNexis; Paul T. Fader ’83 of Haworth, partner, Florio Perrucci Steinhardt & Fader, LLC; Dr. Christopher Houlihan ’81 of Montville, maternal and fetal medicine physician, St. Peter’s University Hospital; and Kathy Walsh ’81 of Kearny, president/CEO, ARC of Bergen and Passaic Counties.

In 1984, he was approached by EMI with an offer to revive the legendary Blue Note jazz label, as well as to create Manhattan, a pop music label.  He has received numerous awards, including the 1996 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jazz Foundation of America and the Russ Sanjek Award for major contributions to recording art. He has also earned three Grammy nominations and a National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) Presidential Award.
