Three-time Grammy winners Los Lobos will perform at William Paterson University’s Shea Center for Performing Arts at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2008 on the campus in Wayne, N.J. The East Los Angeles rock band will be performing selections from their 13th album, The Town and The City, as well as other hits from their acclaimed musical career.

A major force in American pop music for more than three decades, Los Lobos originally called themselves Los Lobos del Este Los Angeles (the Wolves of East Los Angeles). Four friends from the same high school in East Los Angeles formed the band in 1974. They learned traditional Mexican songs from their parents’ records, and then broadened to other forms of Latino music.

In 1984 they shortened their name to Los Lobos and released their first critically acclaimed album, How Will the Wolf Survive? Their career truly hit mainstream in 1987 when the band recorded several Ritchie Valens songs for the hit soundtrack and movie La Bamba. The title track went to No. 1 on the Billboard Singles chart and stayed there for three weeks.

Los Lobos’ music draws equally from rock, R&B, Tex-Mex, blues and traditional Spanish and Mexican influences. They have continued to redefine and expand their unique sound, collecting three Grammy Awards and consistently topping the charts.

Band members are David Hidalgo on vocals, guitar, accordion; Conrad Lozano, vocals, bass, guitarron; Luiz Pérez, drums, guitar, quinto; Cesar Rosas, vocals, bajo sexto guitar, mandolin; and Steve Berlin, vocals, saxophone.

The Town and The City is told in first person with each song serving as an episodic step in the band’s journey. The centerpieces of the album - “The Town” and “The City” - serve as urban reflections of immigrant arrivals. “‘The City’ comes from our own experiences growing up in East L.A. on the edge of downtown Los Angeles,” explains Perez.

The event is part of William Paterson’s Shea Center Presents Vistas Series, designed to serve the University’s students and faculty, as well as the surrounding multicultural community. Funding for the Vistas Series at William Paterson University has been made possible, in part, by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.

Tickets to the show are $60 for Gold Circle seating; $50 rear orchestra/front loge; $40 rear loge; and $35 obstructed view. For ticket information, call the Shea Center Box Office at 973-720-2371.
