WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY OFFERS NEW MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAM IN APPLIED SOCIOLOGY

William Paterson University in Wayne has expanded its graduate degree programs to include a master of arts degree in applied sociology.

The new degree, which focuses on applied diagnostic skills and applied knowledge about diversity in the workplace and society, offers a practical program of studies for individuals seeking a competitive edge in a variety of professional settings, ranging from corporations to community and non-profit organizations.

“Employment for applied sociologists is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations in the foreseeable future,” says Vincent Parrillo, professor of sociology and director of the graduate program. “This program will prepare students to take advantage of the trend toward research, evaluation, and data analysis in today’s workplace settings.”

Courses offered in spring 2009 include GIS Mapping I, which focuses on how to use data to create thematic maps for more effective work presentations and analysis; Health and Social Justice, which examines the role of social economic injustices as the root causes of the uneven distribution of diseases across population groups; and Gender in a Globalizing Society, which explores issues of gender and gender inequality in the context of globalization and the global economy.

Students who enroll in the 33-credit program will work closely with a faculty advisor to tailor a program of studies that suits their needs and interests. The program includes a supervised professional internship, either in their work setting or through placement. Students may also complete a four-course certificate program in assessment and evaluation research skills.

William Paterson University, one of the nine state colleges and universities in New Jersey, offers 42 undergraduate and 22 graduate programs through five colleges: Arts and Communication, Cotsakos College of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health. Located on 370 hilltop acres in Wayne, the University enrolls approximately 10,500 students and provides housing for nearly 2,300 students. The institution’s 373 full-time faculty are highly distinguished and diverse scholars and teachers, many of whom are recipients of prestigious awards and grants from the Fulbright Program, the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation. # # #
