MIDDAY CONCERT ON OCTOBER 30 TO FEATURE WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY MUSIC STUDENTS AND FACULTY WHO TRAVELED TO CHINA FOR CULTURAL EXCHANGE
William Paterson University music students and faculty who traveled to China October 11-22 as part of a cultural exchange between the University and the Nanjing Arts Institute will present a special Midday Artists Series concert on Thursday, October 30 at 12:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the John Victor Machuga Student Center on campus. Admission is free.
“The William Paterson China Tour Homecoming Concert” will feature two student groups: the William Paterson Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mulgrew Miller, associate professor of music and director of jazz studies, and the William Paterson Percussion Ensemble, directed by Payton MacDonald, assistant professor of music. Also performing will be Karen Demsey, flute, William Paterson professor of music, who also performed in China. The concert will include works that the students and faculty performed during two performances at Nanjing Arts Institute in Nanjing and one at Zhejiang University of Technology in Hangzhou.
William Paterson’s relationship with Nanjing Arts Institute, the oldest arts academy established in China, dates to 1996, and has included a number of cultural exchanges by faculty and students. Most recently, a group of music students and faculty from Nanjing visited William Paterson last April. During their visit, they presented two public concerts during which they presented traditional and contemporary Chinese music performed on a wide variety of traditional Chinese instruments.
Students who will perform in the concert include Jeffrey Brown of North Haledon, Dana La Marca of Little Falls, Adam Lomeo of Utica, NY; Theodore Metz of Montevallo, AL; Eric O’Donnell of Hawthorne; Ethan O’Reilly of Montclair; David Pollock, Jr. of Hamilton Town; Joseph Schmidt of Mount Airy, MD; William Test of Phillipsburg, PA; Nathan Webb of North Newton, KS; and Shannon Zakarison of Haledon.
