William Paterson University Celebrates African Heritage in February


Comedy, music, and theater will support the theme of “You Can Steal the Root but not the Fruit,” William Paterson University’s annual African Heritage celebration in February. Most events are free and open to the public. Events scheduled include:

Wednesday, February 4 through Friday, February 6
“A Photograph: Lovers in Motion,” a play by Ntozake Shange about a young, ambitious, and misogynistic photographer and his relationship with the three women in his life. The program will be held at the Hunziker Black Box Theater at 7:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $6 for students; $17 standard. Sponsored by SABLE & NAACP.

Thursday February 5
“A King’s Dream Performance,” a multi-media performance that highlights the spirit of the civil rights movement. The event will be held in University Commons, Ballroom C, at 12:30 p.m. Sponsored by the John Victor Machuga Foundation.

Thursday, February 12

“Fajitas, Greens and All in Betweens,” a comedy jam that offers a lesson in diversity with some of America’s top comedians. The program will be held in Shea Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for William Paterson students; $12 William Paterson community; $15 general public; and $8 for students from other colleges and universities. The event is sponsored by Shea Center for Performing Arts.

William Paterson University’s African Heritage Celebration is sponsored by the Student Government Association, the African Heritage Celebration Committee, Student Activities Programming Board, Brothers for Awareness, CARIBSA, EBONEE, National Pan-Hellenic Council, NAACP-William Paterson Chapter, SABLE, Office of Educational Enrichment, Department of African, African-American and Caribbean Studies, Shea Center for Performing Arts, Office of Campus Activities & Student Leadership and the John Victor Machuga Foundation.
