Cherish the Ladies, the most sought-after Irish-American group in Celtic music, will perform traditional Irish music and dance in a holiday show, Celtic Christmas, at William Paterson University on Sunday, December 6. in Shea Center for Performing Arts.
The show will be held at 2 p.m. Pre-show activities begin at 1:15 p.m., starting with a question and answer session with Cherish the Ladies. An Irish step dance group from the Peter Smith School of Irish Dance will perform prior to Cherish the Ladies at 1:40 p.m. as well during the show.
Celtic Christmas brings together harmonies, Celtic instrumentation and high-energy step dancing in a repertoire that includes traditional songs and popular carols.
Taking their name from the name of a traditional Irish jig, the group initially won recognition as the first and only all-women traditional Irish band. In a relatively short time, they soon established themselves as musicians and performers without peer and have won many thousands of listeners and fans of their music.
A six-woman ensemble, Cherish the Ladies has performed throughout North and South America, the United Kingdom and Europe, Australia and New Zealand. They have shared the stage with such noted entertainers as James Taylor, Joan Baez, Emmy Lou Harris, The Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem, The Chieftains, and dozens of symphony orchestras. The "Celtic Album," their collaboration with the Boston Pops Symphony, led to a Grammy nomination.
With their unique blend of virtuosi instrumental talents, beautiful vocals and arrangements, this powerhouse group combines all the facets of Irish traditional culture and puts it forth in a humorous and entertaining package.
The Peter Smith School of Irish Dance has trained thousands of children and young adults, including several dancers who went on to win multiple World, All Ireland, North American and Regional Championship titles. Several of Peter’s dancers have performed in Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames, Dancing on Dangerous Ground and Pirate Queen.
This tour engagement of Cherish the Ladies is funded in part through the American Masterpieces program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius, a major initiative to acquaint Americans with the best of their cultural and artistic legacy.
The event is part of William Paterson’s WPLive Vistas Series, designed to serve the University’s students and faculty, as well as the surrounding multicultural community. Funding for the Vistas Series at William Paterson University has been made possible, in part, by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.
Tickets to the show are $35 for gold circle, $30 for orchestra, and $20 for loge. For ticket information, call the Shea Center Box Office at 973-720-2371 or order online at www.wplive.org.
