William Paterson University Sponsors Conference for Students, Teachers in Grades 6-12
---Program focuses on creating “History Day” projects
“Doing History,” a conference designed to prepare students and teachers in grades 6-12 for the annual state and national History Day competition, will be held on Friday, October 30 on the campus of William Paterson University.
More than 250 students from schools all over the state, including Wayne, Oakland, Hawthorne, Montville, Teaneck, and School #12 and John F. Kennedy High School in Paterson, are expected to participate in the event.
They will attend workshops and presentations geared to learning more about History Day, an annual, nationwide education program for students in middle school and high school that focuses on a historical theme. The program will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
The 2009-2010 theme is “Innovation in History: Impact and Change.” Student projects can include papers, documentaries, performances, Web sites, and exhibits. The conference offers workshops on many topics including conducting research, identifying primary and secondary sources, and using oral history interviews in a project.
Alexander Magoun, executive director, David Sarnoff Library, will present the keynote address, “Perspectives on Innovation in History,” at 9:15 a.m. in Shea Center for Performing Arts.
The New Jersey History Day competition will be held in the spring of 2010 at William Paterson, and the national contest will be held in June in Maryland.
