GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS TO BE DISCUSSED DURING CONFERENCE AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY ON APRIL 16

—Speakers from United Nations, Merrill Lynch, MacroFin Analytics and Indian Institute of Management to discuss current financial crisis

The stock market worldwide has been down 50 percent.  Trillions of dollars of wealth have evaporated.  The economy is experiencing the greatest downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s. What does the future hold? These topics will be explored during the Fifth Annual Conference on Global Issues at William Paterson University in Wayne on Thursday, April 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the 1600 Valley Road building on campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

The conference, titled “Global Crisis and Our Future,” will feature Dr. Pingfan Hong, chief for global economic monitoring in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations; Elias Dau, senior financial advisor, Global Wealth Management Division, Merrill Lynch; Dr. Parul Jain, founder and chief investment strategist, MacroFin Analytics; and Dr. B. B. Chakrabarti, professor of finance, Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta.

“There is no purely domestic financial market anymore in today’s globalized world; markets in the United States are a critical and integral part of the overall global economic system.  So, what we do affects other markets, and what goes on abroad affects us, almost on a real-time basis, as any trader would tell us,” says Sam Basu, dean of William Paterson University’s Cotsakos College of Business.  “These four scholars and experts in international economics and finance are uniquely positioned to provide a broad assessment of the financial risks and opportunities posed by today’s fluctuating markets.”

Hong is the chief for global economic monitoring in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), United Nations, in charge of producing global economic outlooks for various UN reports and publications, including the World Economic Situation and Prospects, and the LINK Global Economic Outlook. He earned his Ph.D. in economics from University of Pennsylvania. He received the World Bank McNamara Fellowship in 1985.

Dau is a senior financial advisor in the Global Wealth Management Division of Merrill Lynch in Paramus, New Jersey. A financial advisor for more than a decade, he also serves as the producing sales manager for more than 130 financial advisors located in the Paramus office.  Dau also holds the titles of Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor, Certified Financial Manager and Certified Special Needs Advisor within Merrill Lynch.

Jain is founder and chief investment strategist of MacroFin Analytics, a firm specializing in providing macroeconomic and financial market insight. She previously served as director of U.S. credit strategy at Standard & Poor’s, deputy chief economist at Nomura Securities, and economist/fixed income analytics role at TIAA-CREF and Prudential. Jain is a past president of the New York Association for Business Economics and continues to serve as their membership director. Recently elected to the board of directors of the National Association for Business Economics, she has served on the editorial board of the association’s journal, Business Economics, since 2003. Jain received her Ph.D. in economics from Washington University in St. Louis.

Chakrabarti is a professor of finance at Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. Previously, he worked in Indian and multinational corporations at the senior and top management level, primarily in the financial services sector. Chakrabarti holds a Ph.D. in economics from Jadavpur University, India. He is also a certified management accountant.

The event is sponsored by the Global Financial Services Institute and the Department of Economics, Finance, and Global Business in the University’s Cotsakos College of Business.  For additional information, contact the Global Financial Services Institute of the Cotsakos College of Business, at 973-720-3525.
