PATERSON’S CULTURAL CHALLENGES TO BE DISCUSSED BY PANEL AT ISLAMIC CENTER OF PASSAIC COUNTY ON DECEMBER 6

The cultural challenges faced by residents of Paterson, one of the nation’s most culturally diverse cities, will be the focus of a panel discussion on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 3 p.m. at the Islamic Center of Passaic County at 152 Derrom Avenue in Paterson. Admission is free.
The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Cheng Library at William Paterson University. The program, titled “Paterson Today: Making Lives, Remaking Communities,” will explore the challenges in balancing the tension between familiar cultural continuities and new cultural confrontations in the city, which has long been the destination of immigrants from many regions of the world. Panelists include Mohammed El Filali, Islamic Center of Passaic County; Rev. Douglas Maven, First AME Zion Church; Rev. Lilia Ramirez, Iglesia Prebiteriana Hispana de Paterson; Rev. David Wolf, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church; and Cynthia Czesak, director of the Paterson Public Library. The panel will be moderated by Michael Thompson, assistant professor of political science, William Paterson University. A reception will follow the discussion.
