WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY DEAN RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD FOR VISIONARY AND INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO ALCOHOL ABUSE PREVENTION
Glen Sherman, associate vice president and dean of student development at William Paterson University in Wayne, has received a national award for visionary and innovative approaches to alcohol prevention at the University.
Sherman was named the 2008-2009 Outstanding OAD (Alcohol and Other Drugs) Professional by Outside the Classroom, Inc., a Boston-based company that addresses critical health issues affecting education, corporate, and government institutions.
Sherman’s “ability to create and sustain collaborative relationships in order to support prevention efforts across campus clearly demonstrates his commitment to creating a healthier, safer campus. More importantly, it is a testament to your investment in creating optimal conditions in which students can learn,” says the letter announcing the award. Sherman will be recognized in NASPA’s Leadership Exchange magazine.
William Paterson University’s Board of Trustees, president, and senior administrators, have made a strong commitment to a comprehensive approach to alcohol-abuse prevention. The University has developed a wide range of programs that emphasize prevention, enforcement and discipline.
Freshmen and transfer students are required to take AlcoholEdu, an online alcohol prevention course to educate students about the consequences of problematic drinking. In addition, specially trained students serve as peer health advocates and help to spread the message to their peers about the need to take a responsible approach to alcohol. The University also reaches beyond the borders of the campus and partners with local towns, police departments, bars and retailers. Working together, they have formed coalitions to increase public awareness and advocacy and to support enforcement of local laws related to alcohol. Most recently, the University was awarded a grant by the New Jersey Division of Addiction Services, Department of Human Services which will facilitate creation of a substance free residence hall with active support for students in recovery.
William Paterson University, one of the nine state colleges and universities in New Jersey, offers 43 undergraduate and 22 graduate programs through five colleges: Arts and Communication, Cotsakos College of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health. Located on 370 hilltop acres in Wayne, the University enrolls more than 10,000 students and provides housing for approximately 2,600 students. The institution’s 379 full-time faculty are highly distinguished and diverse scholars and teachers, many of whom are recipients of prestigious awards and grants from the Fulbright Program, the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation.
