WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO CELEBRATE WORKS OF COMPOSER PAUL HINDEMITH ON APRIL 17 and 18

Hindemithon, the 7th annual festival celebrating the life and works of the German composer Paul Hindemith, will be held at William Paterson University in Wayne from April 17 and 18 in Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus. Admission is free to all events.
A gala concert will be held on Friday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. William Paterson University faculty, students, alumni and guest artists will perform a wide selection of Hindemith’s works. Performers will include Frank Pavese, piano; Ann Roggen, viola; Itay Goren, piano; Timothy Ruedeman, saxophone; and Ivan Miller, trumpet. Frank Pavese, a music instructor at William Paterson, is the founder and artistic director of the Hindemithon.
The festival program continues on Saturday, April 18 at at 4:30 p.m. with films, discussions and performances exploring Hindemith’s musical ideas and contributions to American culture. Hindemith’s quote, “People who make music together cannot be enemies, at least while the music lasts,” will serve as a motto for the event.
Hindemith, who was born in 1895, was a leading exponent of the neoclassic movement. Considered a musical radical as a young man, from the mid-1920s onward he was acknowledged both as one of the key modernist composers of the 20th century and as a teacher and theorist whose influence on younger musicians was unmatched.
