--Holly Pyne Connor, curator of nineteenth-century American art at The Newark Museum, to lecture
--Lecture is co-sponsored by Friends of the Paterson Public Library and Friends of the Cheng Library at William Paterson University
The nineteenth century American paintings that comprised the art collection of prominent Patersonian Garret Hobart, 24th vice president of the United States, and his wife Jennie Hobart will be the subject of a special lecture on Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m. in the Assembly Room of the Paterson Public Library at 250 Broadway in Paterson. Admission is $10. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Paterson Public Library and the Friends of the William Paterson University Library.
Holly Pyne Connor, curator of nineteenth century American art at The Newark Museum, will give the lecture, “Paterson’s Hobart Collection: American Art in the Gilded Age.” Connor will focus on the Hobart’s art collection, which includes a stellar representation of landscapes and charming genre scenes from such prominent artists as William Merritt Chase, Thomas Worthington Whittredge and J. Eastman Johnson. In 1925, Mrs. Hobart gave the collection to the city of Paterson; today, the collection is held in trust by the Paterson Library Board of Trustees.
William Paterson University shares an intimate connection with the Hobart family and Paterson. Hobart Manor, a National Historic Site and the focal point of the University’s Wayne campus, was purchased by Jennie Hobart in 1902 as a gift for her son, Garret Hobart Jr. The 40-room manor and its surrounding 250-acre estate were sold to the state of New Jersey in 1948 to become the new home of the University, which was originally situated in Paterson.
Connor has served as curator of numerous exhibitions at The Newark Museum, including the ground-breaking “Picturing America,” the 2000 reinstallation of the museum’s renowned permanent collection of American art. She has lectured and published extensively on nineteenth century American art, specifically in the areas of women’s issues, genre painting, portraiture, and landscape. Connor holds a doctorate in art history from Rutgers University.
