GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING RANDY BRECKER TO PERFORM WITH THE WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY JAZZ ORCHESTRA DIRECTED BY DAVID DEMSEY IN JAZZ ROOM SERIES FINALE

Randy Brecker

Randy Brecker, a five-time Grammy Award winner who has been shaping the sound of jazz, R&B and rock for more than four decades, will perform with the William Paterson University Jazz Orchestra, directed by David Demsey, for the final concert of the spring 2009 Jazz Room Series on Sunday, April 19, 2009.

The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the University’s campus in Wayne, N.J.  Prior to the concert, Brecker and other concert performers will be the guests for “Sittin’ In,” an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in room 101 of Shea Center.  Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.

Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the performance at $15 standard; $12 senior citizens, William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni; and $8 for non-William Paterson students. William Paterson students may attend free of charge.

Brecker is best known for his landmark contributions to jazz-rock and fusion, including his co-leadership of the seminal Brecker Brothers Band with his influential late brother, saxophonist Michael.

Brecker’s trumpet and flugelhorn performances have graced hundreds of albums by a wide range of artists from James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen and Parliament-Funkadelic to Frank Sinatra, Steely Dan, David Sanborn, Jaco Pastorius, Horace Silver and Frank Zappa.

His recent CD, Randy in Brasil, was chosen one of the top 10 CDs of 2009 by AllAboutJazz.com and won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.

Brecker continues to influence and inspire young musicians, performing at colleges and universities all over the world. He is a Yamaha clinician, and his residency is supported through generous funding from Yamaha.

Launched in 1978, The Jazz Room is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, from practitioners of traditional jazz to avant-garde to bebop to swing to Afro-Latin jazz, as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has won numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and more than 25 years of continuous support from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.

Funding for The Jazz Room at William Paterson University has been made possible, in part, by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.
