--Program is designed for professional communicators in business, public service and a variety of media industries
William Paterson University in Wayne has expanded its graduate degree programs to include a master of arts degree in professional communication, with specialized tracks for corporate and strategic communication and new media and professional writing.
The new degree, which emphasizes applied communication and managerial skills, offers a practical program of studies for individuals seeking the enhanced written, oral and visual communication skills that are essential to professional communicators in business, public service and a variety of media industries. Courses toward the degree will begin in fall 2010.
“As the communication professions become increasingly globalized, the M.A. in professional communication is designed to give future leaders the applied skill sets to excel as professionals in their industries,” says Joann Lee, professor and chair of the communication department at William Paterson. “The program emphasizes written, oral and visual communication in a professional context, essential to professional communicators in business, public service and a variety of media industries.”
The 30-credit program offers two specialized tracks: corporate and strategic communication, which focuses on public relations and entrepreneurial skills, and new media and professional writing, which covers the digital media tools needed for professional media production and communication writing in the corporate environment. Courses offered include organizational communication, writing for digital media, crisis and reputation management, and technology and integrated communication.
Students who enroll in the program will create a body of work in writing and digital forms to be included in a professional or scholarly portfolio. All students will complete a master’s project under the supervision of a faculty member; a graduate-level internship may be incorporated as part of the project to enhance the student’s professional preparation.
The program is housed in Hobart Hall, William Paterson’s state-of-the-art communication center. The building features television and radio stations, distance learning facilities, a teleconferencing/video conferencing center, a fully equipped telemedia lab, and film screening and production rooms. Graduate students are encouraged to utilize the facilities and to participate in media-related activities.
