PATERSON AND PASSAIC TEACHERS TO HEAD OUTDOORS DURING MATH AND SCIENCE INSTITUTE AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY FROM AUGUST 10 TO 21
—Field experiences include trip to Ramapo River to assess water quality and GPS mapping and technology treasure hunt

Thirty Paterson and Passaic public school teachers seeking to strengthen hands-on math and science curriculum in their classrooms will study the Ramapo River to assess water quality and learn GPS and mapping technology as part of the REFORMS Summer Institute at William Paterson University in Wayne from August 10 to 21.

The institute is part of a three-year, $1.5 million New Jersey Department of Education grant project titled REFORMS: Reclaiming Educational Foundations of Rigorous Math and Science. The grant provides professional development and graduate courses for current Paterson and Passaic teachers to become highly qualified by enhancing their math and science skills.

Content for the two-week professional development institute focuses on ecology and mathematical measurement, and includes two activities that are highly visual:

August 11 and 18— “Treasure Hunt” Using GPS:  Workshop participants will engage in a “treasure hunt” using GPS and mapping technology to find objects in specific locations on campus.  Martin Becker, a professor of environmental science and a paleontologist, will lead the activity.

August 13 and 20:  Ramapo River Field Trip:  Wearing hip-waders, the teachers will head into the Ramapo River in Mahwah to collect water samples and return to the University’s lab to test them for water quality.  Michael Sebetich, professor of biology and a specialist in the ecology of rivers, is the instructor.

If you are interested in covering the institute, please contact Phillip Sprayberry, media relations coordinator, at 973-720-2965 or sprayberryp@wpunj.edu.
