William Paterson University Celebrates Women’s History Month in March
Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet is this year’s theme as William Paterson University celebrates Women’s History Month with lectures, performances, and films that support the theme. All events listed are open to the public; most are free. Events scheduled include:
March 3 and March 4
The Vagina Monologues – By Eve Ensler Benefit performances will be held as part of a world-wide campaign to end violence against women and girls. Proceeds go to the Strengthen Our Sisters Shelter, West Milford. Performances on Tuesday, March 3 at 12:30 and 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday at 7 p.m. Tickets, $5 for WPUNJ students with ID; $12, faculty, staff, and guests. Tickets will be sold at the door. Black Box Theater, Hunziker Hall.
Thursday, March 5
Opening Ceremony: Samantha Corbin – Activist and Organizer “Environmental Justice: A Closer Look at the Distribution of Environmental Burdens.” Refreshments will be served. Admission is free. University Commons, Multi-Purpose Room, 12:30 p.m.
Gorillas In The Mist: Film & Discussion A film based on the true life adventure of anthropologist Dian Fossey in Africa’s wild mountain ranges and her efforts to save endangered gorillas. Leading the discussion will be Susan Bedell, adjunct professor, women’s studies. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free. Library Auditorium, 5:00 p.m.
Monday, March 9
Body Art: Female Genitalia Iron, chocolate, toilet paper, wax, candy, soap, cement, crayon …are the materials used for this unusual collection of double-sided 3-D pieces. Interactive presentation by Laura Gravenstine ‘07. Light Refreshments will be served. Admission is free. Library Auditorium, 5:30 p.m.
Thursday, March 12
Ruthie & Connie: Every Room In The House: Film & Discussion An inspirational documentary about two Jewish grandmothers as they look back on their life-long lesbian relationship. Arlene Holpp Scala, professor, women’s studies, will lead the discussion. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free. Library Auditorium, 11 a.m.
Does Hip Hop Hate Women? Hip-hop is frequently condemned for its misogynistic exploitation of women. Bakari Kitwana, best-selling author, journalist, activist, and political analyst will take a closer look into hip-hop as a tool for examining gender relations in America. University Commons, Ballroom C, 12:30 p.m.
Tuesday, March 24
The History Of Feminism - Roundtable A roundtable discussion about historical and contemporary understandings of feminism. Come and learn what feminism has meant to women in the past, and what it means for women living in today’s society. Panelists include Arlene Holpp Scala, professor of women’s studies, William Paterson, and Lucia McMahon, assistant professor of history, William Paterson. Light refreshments will be served. University Commons, Ballroom C, 2 p.m.
Thursday, March 26
Women’s History Month Closing Ceremony: Red Dress Dinner Fourth annual celebration to honor recipients of the Women of Vision Award, and student essay contest winners. Minimum donation for William Paterson students is $5; and $25 for faculty, staff, and guests. Proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association. University Commons, Ballrooms B and C, 5 to 7 p.m.
Monday, March 30
“The Life and Career of a Woman Physician.” Dana Holwitt, M.D., will speak about her career. Light refreshments will be served. Cheng Library Auditorium, 5:30 to 6:50 p.m.
Tuesday, March 31
Careers in Women’s Studies William Paterson University women's studies graduates participate in a panel discussion about their careers and graduate school experiences. Light refreshments will be served. University Commons, Room 202, 6:30 p.m.
