WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO HOST NEW TRI-STATE COMPETITION FOR FUNNIEST COLLEGE STUDENT AND FUNNIEST COLLEGE
--Contest will feature aspiring stand-up comedians attending colleges and universities in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut
William Paterson University’s annual competition for Funniest College Student and Funniest College just got bigger and better. Now, for the first time, the competition is open to college students who either live or go to school in the tri-state region. Formerly limited to William Paterson and other colleges in New Jersey, the competition has been expanded to include aspiring college stand-up comics from New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut.
The event will be held on April 24 and 25, 2009 at 8 p.m. in the Martini Conference Room of Hobart Hall on the campus in Wayne. Tickets are $15 standard and $10 for the William Paterson community, students, and senior citizens.
“We want to give student comedians from all over the opportunity to perform in a professionally produced showcase and have their comedy routines seen by top-notch comedy professionals,” says Stephen Rosenfield, who teaches the comedy program at William Paterson and is director of the American Comedy Institute in New York City. “This year’s show is going to be a complete blast.”
The stand-ups will be judged by a stellar array of professional comedians, including Michael Somerville, star of TV’s new hit show, Wingman; Ted Greenberg, Emmy Award-winning comedy writer formerly with the David Letterman Show and current star of The Complete Performer, the off- Broadway comedy show now playing at the Soho Playhouse; and Rock Albers, two-time MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs) Award winner for funniest stand-up in New York.
The winners of best male stand-up and best female stand-up will receive an opportunity to perform their stand-up act at Gotham Comedy Club in New York City.
For the last seven years, William Paterson students have trained as stand-up comics, comedy writers, and actors as part of the theatre and comedy concentration offered as a component of the bachelor’s degree in communication.
The event is produced by the Communication Department at William Paterson as part of University Theatre. Rosenfield is the event director and he co-produces the competition with Elizabeth Stroppel, associate professor, theatre.
