ARTIST EXPLORES BOUNDARIES BETWEEN THE ABSTRACT AND REPRESENTATIONAL IN ONE-PERSON SHOW Catherine St. John, whose colorful paintings explore the boundaries between abstraction and representation, will present a one-person show from January 24 through March 3, 2000 in the Ben Shahn Galleries at William Paterson University in Wayne. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Wednesday, February 2 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. St. Johns exhibit of recent paintings, in Ben Shahns East Gallery, strikes a balance between images of nature and the man-made. Her work expresses the reality of her own experience and perceptions of life, she says, asserting that art speaks to our awareness of ourselves and community. The paintings are "reinventions of the world as my mind reflects on it," she says. St. John received a doctor of arts degree from New York University, and her masters and bachelors degrees from William Paterson University. Her works have been exhibited in New York and metropolitan area galleries, including the National Academy of Design, the New World Art Center, Heckscher Museum, and the Bergen Museum of Art. Also on view in the Ben Shahn Galleries from January 24 through March 3 are "Martha Posner: The Garment Series" and "Before You Can Say Jackie Robinson: A History of Black Baseball in New Jersey." # # #
