April is Stravinsky Month at William Paterson University
--Music department will present concerts ranging from classical to jazz

Igor Stravinsky, one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, is being celebrated with several music concerts and a symposium at William Paterson University in Wayne during April.

All facets of the University's music department, from classical to jazz, join together in this celebration of the composer. "We plan a variety of performances of Stravinsky's works, including the familiar and the not so familiar," says Stephen Marcone, chair, music department.

The Orchestra at William Paterson will perform Stravinsky's "Scene de Ballet" at its concert on Saturday, April 15 at 8 p.m. David Wroe is the conductor. The Orchestra, formerly the Wayne Chamber Orchestra, is in its 15th season in residence at the University and includes professional musicians and select student instrumentalists.

On Sunday, April 16 at 4 p.m., the William Paterson University Concert Choir, directed by Stephen Bryant, will perform Stravinsky's "Symphony of Psalms" and Haydn's "Mass in the Time of War."

A symposium on "The Influence of Stravinsky on 20th Century Music" will be presented on Monday, April 17, at 3:30 p.m. Guest speaker Claudio Spies, a professor of music at The Julliard School and a noted authority on the works of Stravinsky, is the keynote speaker. As a conductor, Spies led some of the first performances of the late works of Stravinsky. Other speakers include Jeffrey Kresky, John Link, and Anton Vishio, professors of music at William Paterson, and David Shapiro, professor of art.

The William Paterson Jazz Ensemble joins the University's New Music Ensemble for a New Music Festival concert on Monday, April 17 at 8 p.m. The program will include Stravinsky's "Ebony Concerto" and "L'Histoire du Soldat."

On Wednesday, April 26 at 8 p.m., the William Paterson University Wind Ensemble, conducted by J.
