AQUILA THEATRE COMPANY TO PRESENT "THE TEMPEST" AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY IN WAYNE "The Tempest," the
classic play by William Shakespeare, will be staged by the critically
acclaimed Aquila Theatre Company during a special one-night-only performance
at William Paterson University in Wayne on Tuesday, October 16, 2001. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus. Tickets are $22 standard, $20 for senior citizens and members of the William Paterson community, and $7 for William Paterson students. Parking is free. One of Shakespeares last
and most intricate works, "The Tempest" examines human behavior
as it strives for utopia. Set in a metaphoric world, the magician Prospero
skillfully manipulates three groups of lost travelers who are shipwrecked
on the enchanted shores of a magical island. Covering the universal themes
of love, enslavement, greed and murder, Shakespeare weaves a marvelous
dramatic web linking the strands of what defines us as human. The Aquila Theatre Company,
which presents this production as part of its 2001-2002 North American
tour, has gained an international reputation as one of the foremost producers
of touring classical theatre. Founded in 1991 by Peter Meineck, the company
is comprised of a multitalented group of performers with experience in
all facets of the contemporary New York Broadway theatre and British theatre
scenes, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Royal National
Theatre, among others. The recipient of critical and
academic acclaim for its work worldwide, Aquila was recently named Company
in Residence at the Center for Ancient Studies at New York University.
The company has received the prize for dramatic excellence from the Greek
government and several prestigious British Council Touring awards. This tour of Aquila Theatre
Company is made possible by a grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation,
in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring
Program.
