DAVID WROE TO LEAD WAYNE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA IN A SYMPHONY EXTRAVAGANZA David Wroe, music director of New Jersey's Westfield Symphony Orchestra, conducts the Wayne Chamber Orchestra in a concert of colorful symphonic works on February 26, 1999. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the Shea
Center for Performing Arts at The program includes the New Jersey premiere of "Glimpses" and "Where Angels May Lie Down Among Us," two works by Joelle Wallach, the Orchestra's featured composer this season. Other works include "Consecration of the House Overture" by Beethoven, and "La Bamboula" by Coleridge-Taylor. The concert ends with the spectacular "Firebird Suite" by Stravinsky. "Wroe is turning into one of the state's musical treasures, a master of orchestral texture whose outgoing personality and solid skills have raised morale among players and patrons alike," said Peter Spencer of the Star-Ledger in a recent review of the Westfield Symphony. In addition to serving as the group's music director, Wroe is principle conductor of the Philharmonische Der Stadt Heidelberg and music director of the Kansas City Camerata. Previously, he served as assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Wroe has conducted the Boston Symphony
Orchestra, the Saint Louis Symphony, New York City Ballet and
other major orchestras. His opera credits include "La Boheme"
with the Stadt Theatre der Heidelberg, as well as "Fidelio"
and "Amadis." A native of Great Britain, Wroe is a
graduate of Manchester University in England and Northwestern
University in Chicago, Ill. Tickets for the concert are $30, $25, and $20, depending on the location. Students may purchase two tickets for the rear loge at $5 each; a valid I.D. card is required. The Wayne Chamber Orchestra is supported
in part by grants from the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage
Council, through a grant from the New Jersey State Council on
the Arts/Department of State. In addition, the orchestra is
underwritten in part by William Paterson University and supported
by gifts from private individuals, area businesses and corporations.
