William Paterson University College of Business Seeks Accreditation

The College of Business at William Paterson University has embarked on a five-year program to earn accreditation from the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), a national accreditation agency.

An action plan forwarded to the AACSB last year resulted in candidacy status for William Paterson "which is itself an honor," says Frank Grippo, dean of the College of Business. The plan was the result of work completed during the 1997-98 academic year by six committees that assessed and analyzed every area of the College and highlighted its strengths and areas that needed improvement. All 27 members of the faculty and the dean participated in this process and three advisory councils were set up to assist in the process that included members of the business college faculty, students and alumni.

The agency's 39 standards of accreditation include the requirement that 60 percent of the business faculty are full time; development of an infrastructure; and the construction of a building to house the College of Business. Plans are currently underway to meet those standards.

According to Grippo only four institutions in New Jersey are accredited by the AACSB: Rider University, Rutgers University, Seton Hall University, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

The College of Business currently offers a Master of Business Administration Program; undergraduate disciplines include accounting and law; marketing and management; and economics, finance and global business. Expanded departmental resources include a Small Business and Tax Institute; A Non-Profit Business Tutorial Lab; and an extended internship program.
