WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO HOLD MID-YEAR COMMENCEMENT ON JANUARY 17

William Paterson University in Wayne will celebrate its mid-year commencement on Sunday, January 17, 1999 at 1 p.m. in the Rec Center on campus. In the event of snow or severe inclement weather, the ceremony will be held Tuesday, January 19 at 7 p.m.

Dr. Darryl G. Greer, executive director of the New Jersey State College Governing Boards Association (NJSCGBA), will be the commencement speaker. The ceremony marks the institution's 168th commencement.

A total of 712 students are scheduled to receive degrees. Bachelor's degrees will be conferred on 651 undergraduates; 61 students will receive master's degrees. All graduates will have completed their degree requirements between August and December, 1998.

President Arnold Speert will address the graduating class along with Jamal Hall, senior class president. Doris White, senior faculty member and professor of curriculum and instruction, will lead the academic procession in her role as college marshal.

Graduates will be individually recognized by college and major and will proceed to the platform, where the college dean will award the diploma. Receptions for the graduates and their families and friends will be held in the Student Center immediately following commencement.

Greer has served as executive director of the nonprofit NJSCGBA since it was created in 1986 to advance the autonomy of New Jersey's nine state colleges and universities. He joined the association after seven years at The College Board, where he was director for government relations from 1981 to 1986 and a policy planning officer from 1979 to 1981. Previously, Greer held positions with the Ohio Board of Regents and the Ohio Legislative Service Commission. He has lent his expertise to several national projects, including the Higher Education Project of the Pew Charitable Trusts and the National Commission on Responsibilities for Financing Higher Education. A graduate of Indiana University, Greer earned master's and doctoral degrees in political science from Stanford University. He is a resident of Pennington, N.J.
