WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO HOLD COMMENCEMENT ON MAY 11 William Paterson University has set Tuesday, May 11 as the date for its 169th commencement ceremony, which will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wightman Field on the campus in Wayne. The raindate is Wednesday, May 12, also at 10:30 a.m. A total of 887 graduates are scheduled to receive degrees. Bachelor's degrees will be conferred upon 777 undergraduates; 110 students will receive master's degrees. All graduates will have completed their degree requirements between January and May 1999. Susan Lisovicz, a graduate of William Paterson, and an anchor and correspondent for CNN Financial News, will give the commencement address and will receive the President's Medal, given for "outstanding service to the University community, academe, or society as a whole." President Arnold Speert will address the graduating class along with Jamal Hall who will deliver the statement for the Class of 1999. Frederick L. Gruel, chairperson of the William Paterson University Board of Trustees, will confer an honorary doctor of laws degree upon William J. Pascrell Jr., United States Representative from the Eighth Congressional District, during the ceremony. Pascrell, a native of Paterson, who was elected to a second term as Representative in November 1998, previously served as mayor of his hometown and was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly in 1987 after many years on the Paterson Board of Education. William Muir, senior faculty member and
an associate professor of art, will lead the academic procession
onto Wightman Field in his role as University marshal. Graduates
will be recognized by college and major and will proceed to the
platform where the college dean will award the diplomas. Receptions
for students, faculty and guests will be held in a tent in Caldwell
Plaza following commencement activities. Lisovicz, who graduated in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in communication, joined CNN in 1997 where she is based in the network's financial news headquarters in New York City. Previously, she was a correspondent and anchor at CNBC where her assignments included the World Trade Center bombing in 1993, several major media mergers, overseas reporting including a series on the Panama Canal, and coverage of the end of apartheid in South Africa. Prior to CNBC, she was a CNN general assignments reporter and Headline News anchor based in Atlanta. She was also a staff reporter for the Associated Press. Lisovicz is a former president of the New York Financial Writers' Association and currently serves on its board of governors.
