WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO HOLD CONFERENCE FOR GRANDPARENTS William Paterson University in Wayne is sponsoring an open public forum, "Grandparents Raising Grandchildren," on Wednesday, September 15 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Hillcrest Community Center in West Milford and again on Wednesday, September 29 from 9 a.m. to noon in the County Administration Building in Paterson. Admission is free. The University's Institute for Creative Aging is a co-sponsor of the event along with Grandparents as Parents (GAP) Task Force of Passaic County, and Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Passaic County. The event will provide an opportunity for those involved to share information on a number of different issues including legal, health, education and housing needs and services available to those who provide care. "Grandparents have always played an important role in raising grandchildren," says Daphne Joslin, director of the Institute. "Today's social and health epidemics-HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, violence, inner city poverty, and the growing incarceration of women-have placed the responsibility for child rearing on the shoulders of thousands of grandparents in Passaic County, across the state and the nation. As one of its advocacy activities, The Institute for Creative Aging has joined with other agencies in the county to give voice to the needs and concerns of these older adults who have stepped forward to care for children whose parents are unable or unwilling to do so." Institute at 973-720-3690 or Barbara E. Martin, newswriter, 973-720-2949
