"MASTER CLASS" -- AWARD-WINNING PLAY TO BE PRESENTED AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY

"Master Class," the Tony Award-winning best play by Terrence McNally, comes to William Paterson University in Wayne on Monday, September 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Shea Center.

A national tour presented by Encore Attractions and starring British actress Charlotte Cornwell, the play will be a one-performance only event. Tickets are $15 and $20 standard, $12 for the William Paterson community and senior citizens, and $7 for non-William Paterson students. Tickets for William Paterson students are $5.

Based on an actual event, the play puts the audience front and center at a master class with the internationally celebrated and renowned opera diva Maria Callas. As she works to instill her fierce dedication and passion in three young singers, she seduces the audience with her larger-than-life personality. During the session, the music of the arias drops her into memory and she relives her bitter childhood in wartime Greece, phenomenal acclaim at the great opera houses like La Scala, her triumph over her enemies, and her tumultuous and tragic love affair with another giant, Aristotle Onassis.

Maria Callas will be played by Charlotte Cornwell, formerly with Great Britain's Royal National and Royal Shakespeare Theatre Companies. Her credits include a host of plays including two national tours in the United States, numerous television series, and major motion pictures on both sides of the Atlantic, including "Russia House," "White Hunter Black Heart," and "The Saint."
The production will be directed by Thomas Caruso, who has been involved with "Master Class" since its Broadway debut in 1995. He was the assistant director for both the original Broadway version and the first National Tour starring Faye Dunaway.
