PIANIST DAVID HOLZMAN IS GUEST ARTIST AT WILLIAM PATERSON'S NEW MUSIC SERIES

David Holzman, an award-winning pianist who has premiered works by over 100 composers from around the world, will perform on Monday, February 8 at William Paterson University in Wayne.

The recital, part of William Paterson's continuing New Music Festival series and co-sponsored by the Composers Guild of New Jersey, will begin at 8 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne. Admission is free.

Featured on the program will be Robert Carl's "Nach Traum ist Kommen" (1990); a world premiere of Arthur Kreiger's "By the Water's Edge" (1998); "Rondo "(1995) by Robert Moevs; "Kabuki" (1987) by Michael Ball; and "Inward Journey" (1989) by Ursula Mamlock. Holzman will also perform "Elegy," a 1998 piece by Matthew Greenbaum, "Piano Sonata #3" (1996) by Raoul Pleskow; "Synchronisms 6" (1970) for piano and electronic sounds by Mario Davidovsky; and "Piano Sonata" (1918) by Charles Griffes.

Holzman, who began his solo career in the 1980s, has earned consistent praise for his virtuoso performances. Andrew Porter, writing in the New Yorker, called him a "master pianist," and his all-Martino recital was chosen by the New York Times as one of the highlights of the 1991 concert season. His first solo recording on CRI Records, featuring Stefan Wolpe's "Battle Piece," was called "one of the greatest piano discs of the decade" by New York Magazine. Richard Taruskin of Opus Magazine described the recording as "an experience you owe yourself. You'll never forget it."

Holzman has performed live radio programs on such stations as New York's WNYC. In May 1993, his recording of Donald Martino's "Twelve Preludes" was chosen by WGBH as one of the first selections to be syndicated worldwide through American Public Radio's "Art of the States" program. The recording is being heard in more than 40 participating countries.

Holzman studied at the Mannes College of Music in New York with Paul Jacobs, and completed his studies with Nadia Reisenberg. Early in his career he was active as an ensemble musician, playing with most of New York's major ensembles under such conductors as Gerard Schwartz, Arthur Weisberg and Charles Wuorinen.

William Paterson's New Music Festival is directed by Raymond Des Roches of Midland Park, a professor of music at the university and one of the country's premier percussionists. The series is dedicated to highlighting the works of contemporary composers.
