Wind Ensemble and Concert Band Celebrate the Centennial of North Haledon
and Prospect Park The William Paterson University
Wind Ensemble and Concert Band will perform a tribute to the 100th anniversary
of North Haledon and Prospect Park on Thursday, December 13 at 8 p.m.
in Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus. Admission is free and open
to the public. The theme of the concert is
"Music Through Time" and will show the evolution of music from
the turn of the century when these communities were established to the
music of today. Pianist Gary Kirkpatrick will perform "Rhapsody in
Blue" with the Wind Ensemble. Joel Craig Davis, director of bands
at William Paterson, will conduct the concert. The program will include
works by Reed, Grainger, Hanson, and Smith. Internationally acclaimed pianist
and William Paterson faculty member Gary Kirkpatrick is recognized throughout
the world as one of Americas foremost soloists, chamber musicians,
and teachers. Kirkpatricks numerous concert tours and television
and radio broadcasts have taken him to over 40 countries. A strong proponent
of 20th century music, he has explored new horizons in compositions created
especially for him during his tenure as pianist with the renowned Verdehr
Trio. Last season, Kirkpatrick performed in Estonia, Austria, Greece,
Cyprus, Japan and the United States. In celebration of the Gershwin centennial,
Kirkpatrick gave three performances of "Rhapsody in Blue" with
the Century Orchestra in Osaka, Japan. He also performed Gershwins
"Preludes" during the William Paterson University Gershwin Festival,
and the "Concerto in F" with the Ridgewood, New Jersey Symphony
Orchestra. Davis, an assistant professor
of music at William Paterson, is also director of music admissions and
recruitment, and brass coordinator for the Universitys music department.
Davis holds a doctor of musical arts degree in trumpet performance from
The Juilliard School. He received his bachelors and masters
degrees in music from the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester.
