WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO HOST WRITERS CONFERENCE

--Event to feature keynote remarks by authors Alice Echols and Sindiwe Magona

Cultural historian Alice Echols and South African writer Sindiwe Magona will be the featured speakers at William Paterson University's annual writers conference on Saturday, April 24, 1999.

"Writing Contexts: A Spring Writers Conference" will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. in the Atrium on the university's campus in Wayne. In addition to the two keynote speeches, the event will include morning and afternoon writing workshops on such topics as fiction, poetry, drama, biography, creative non-fiction, editing, critical writing, and writing across the curriculum, conducted by faculty of William Paterson's English Department. The registration fee is $50; $30 for graduate students.

Echols is the author of "Scars of Sweet Paradise: The Life and Times of Janis Joplin," the first definitive biography of Janis Joplin, which also serves as a cultural history of the 1960s. Her first book, "Daring to Be Bad," is a history of the feminist movement in the United States. Echols has served as a book and music reviewer for The L.A. Weekly, The Nation, Newsday and The Village Voice. She lectures in American history at UCLA and Occidental College.

Magona is the author of several books, including two collections of short stories, "Living Loving and Lying Awake at Night" and "Push, Push and Other Stories," the autobiographical works "To My Children's Children" and "Forced to Grow," and a novel, "Mother to Mother." Born in South Africa, Magona works at the United Nations.

William Paterson's distinguished English faculty will lead the morning and afternoon writing workshops. Participants include: Brad Gooch, author of five books including "City Poet: The Life and Times of Frank O'Hara;" Timothy Liu, poet, Pushcart Prize recipient, and author of "Vox Angelica;" Alice Deakins, author of "The Tapestry of Grammar: A Reference for Learners of English;" Linda Hamalian, author of "A Life of Kenneth Rexroth;" Charlotte Nekola, Fulbright scholar and author of "Dream House: A Memoir;" Donna Perry, author of "Backtalk: Women Writers Speak Out;" Philip Cioffari, a playwright who has directed Off-Broadway at the Producer's Club; Robert Kloss, author of "The Unspoken Motive;" and Corri Wells, director of the freshman composition program at William Paterson.
