Donning heavy gloves, hoisting dead limbs and filling trash bags with debris, approximately 135 students and staff spent three hours cleaning up the area surrounding the Great Falls in Paterson on Friday, September 1.

Students spent the morning in a training session on service leadership before arriving in buses. The event was part of a William Paterson University service leadership effort, Collaborations for Change, designed to help students develop an expanded view of leadership and their responsibility to act as role models for the campus and community. Paterson Mayor Jose Torres and Congressman Bill Pascrell welcomed the students and thanked them for all their work and volunteerism.

To emphasize their mission, students descended down the riverbank trails and picked up everything from old tires to discarded mufflers. Volunteers included Student Government Association (SGA) officers, resident assistants, athletes, Greek organization members, club members and others.

“The beautiful thing is that so many different student groups have joined together to work collaboratively on this project,” said Francisco Diaz, assistant vice president for campus life.  Afterward, students returned to the campus to have dinner together and reflect on the day.
