U.S. Senator Robert Menendez and jazz great Dr. Billy Taylor received honorary degrees at William Paterson’s 185th commencement ceremony held on May 20 on Wightman Field. The event featured a commencement address by Senator Menendez whose message to the students advised them to not take the easy way out, but to challenge themselves.

Janet Tracy (middle row, second from left), and her husband Brian Kohn (back row, left) with members of the Loma de Cabrera baseball team, whom they outfitted with equipment on a recent trip.

Janet Tracy, professor of nursing, and her husband, Brian Kohn, HVAC technician in facilities, were in the Dominican Republic earlier this year on a trip sponsored by World Vision. World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

To support the agenda, but in a more personal way, Kohn collected used baseball equipment from several local youth leagues and from Mike Lauterhahn, William Paterson baseball coach. They distributed them to children in Loma de Cabrera who were using a stick and old balls. By the time Tracy and Kohn departed, the entire team was suited up with full gear. In addition to the baseball equipment, Tracy brought tee shirts and jackets for the women, which were donated by members of the nursing department.
