Description:
The Taller Boricua arts collective and gallery in East Harlem has been a nexus for Puerto Rican and Latinx artists since 1969. This print by Rodríguez Calero was included in the Taller Boricua's 30th anniversary publication the Alma Portfolio, or Soul Portfolio. Calero is a printmaker fascinated by religious iconography, and she used the iconic Christian scene of the Assumption of the Virgin to depict a contemporary narrative involving her own family and friends. She portrays her mother, Yolanda Calero, as the Virgin Mary at the center of the image, and portrays herself as the sacrificial lamb at her side. The central inscription is a dedication from the artist's brother Andrés "Tito" Rodríguez, "To the fairest and prettiest mother in the universe." The lower register contains the likenesses of Taller Boricua founders and members Fernando Salicrup, Marcos Dimas, Irma Ayala, Rafael Tufiño, Jesus Muniz, and the artist's eyes. 22 x 34 inches.
