Description:
Isabel Bernal (b. 1935, San Sebastián, Puerto Rico) studied design and printmaking at Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, WI and painting with Osiris Delgado at the Universidad de Puerto Rico. For three decades she worked as a printmaker and as the only female illustrator for the government agency DivEdCo, División de Educación a la Comunidad (Division of Community Education). DivEdCo (1949-89) was an initiative of the Popular Democratic Party of Puerto Rico under the island's first elected governor Luis Muñoz Marín that commissioned a generation of Puerto Rican artists to create educational content for the public, addressing health, literacy, and civic engagement, not unlike the Works Progress Administration. Puerto Rico became an international graphic design powerhouse as artists like Isabel Bernal flourished with state and community support. This silkscreen poster commemorates the University of Puerto Rico choir's first performance at Carnegie Hall in 1949, under the direction of the great Puerto Rican conductor Augusto Rodríguez. 25 ½ x 18 ½ inches.
