Description:
Debra Pearlman focuses on the inner life and vulnerability of children, and her work often speaks to our culture's lack of support for children of all backgrounds and social divides. Pearlman repeats the same head shot of a Black child on each verso page of this work, accompanied by different visual and tactile effects, producing a new image and revealing new ambiguities and tensions each time. The text of an inscription from the walls of the Family Court Building in Brooklyn alternate on each recto page, opposite the portrait: "Through the guiding light of wisdom and understanding shall the family endure and children grow strong in the security of the home for they are the hope of the future."
