Sculpture
Description:
Abstract expressionist painter and sculptor Stella Waitzkin created polyester resin casts of books for decades of her career, creating "shelves" of these sculptures that filled entire rooms in her home/studio/salon in the Chelsea Hotel. Stella Waitzkin was a member of influential artistic circles in New York City-later in Martha's Vineyard-along with Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and many others. Waitzkin's books don't function as literal texts, instead their forms become nuanced images of light, shadow, and color, which she created by modifying the color and translucency of the resin and often submerging found objects into her casts. These cast objects encapsulate Waitzkin's interest in the ephemeral nature of music, light, and water as well as her gravitation toward second-hand materials and even garbage. 7 x 7 inches.
